My latest acquisition, a Sharps repro, is chambered for .45-110 cal. I have brass coming from BA, but haven't figured out any loads yet.
Any of you guys have any experience with this caliber? Any ideas as to what I might expect in recoil, etc, as compared to the .45-70?
I'm not a big fan of recoil, but the darn gun was so cheap, I had to give it a try. Hopefully it's not so bad that I can't use it for elk hunting. I have a special hunt tag starting Jan 1st next year, and I'd like to take my elk with one of my singleshots!

Well, I took the Sharps to the range this morning, and tried a number of different powders, and bullet weights. Also found out since my original post that the Sharps is the .45-100 (.45-2 6/10 Sharps) and not the .45-110 that I was originally lead to believe by the seller. Found a receipt under the buttplate for rechambering to the .45-100, and did a chamber cast to confirm it.
The Sharps seems to like heavier bullets, and 500 grainers prooved the most accurate, regardless of powder used. Tried some plain base, and some paper patched that a friend rolled, and both shot equally well, but lighter 360-420 grain bullets didn't shoot quite as accurately.
Started out with a load of fg black powder, and it did well, but ffg was a bit better. Also shot some smokeless reduced loads, but not quite as accurate either.
Surprisingly, even the full case of Goex ffg black powder and a 500 grain cast bullet, was not as heavy recoiling as I had thought. The 36" barrel seems to help a lot, even when shooting from sand bags at the bench. I don't think I'll start shooting the big Sharps exclusively, but I sure wont mind shooting it a lot more!

I own a PAst recoil pad, and I sure used it the first time I shot the new Sharps. After a few rounds, I really thought it wasn't bad enough to use the Past, and I took it off.
I shot the other 18 rounds without it, and no ill effects! It's really not as much recoil as my .30-06 is.
I'm getting ready to roll some 500 grain paper patch bullets, that a friend gave me. In his cruel sense of humor, he gave me the bullets, and the paper, but refused to roll them for me. He thinks it will be better if I learn myself!
This should be interesting!
