Does anyone have a source for detailed plans for a High Wall with changeable barrels?? I have a source with CNC lathes and mills who is willing to help me create a one-of-a-kind project. Maybe this time I can get some scratching done by K. Hurst. Or am I dreaming??????.........Jim ???

Jim, unless my feeble mind has let me down ASSRA has
1885 prints for sale at a very reasonable price. The Winchester Takedown is not a difficult thing to make but getting it timed for multiple barrels requres some Engineering. Andy Zihornicki's brother down in Florida had some of the takedown lugs or rings made up last year. The price was around $300.00. I think Frog did a writeup on them. Although I am not sure about that. I have seen them and they are first class as far as workmanship and finish. I will see if I can find the address for Andy's brother and come back if you are interested. Regards, FITZ.

I happen to have a Farrow that was made from casting by Rodney Storie. A friend put it together for me. He has one & I was so impressed with it I ordered one for myself.  I'm quite sure it would be far cheaper to have one put together than machine one. If anyone wants to contact Rodney, I can put you in touch with him. Oh yeah,  he offers about 20 different actions. Right now, I am having a stock fitted to me newest Rodney cast action.  It is a 40-60 Maynard on a Redfield action. There were only seven of these actions made and only two are known to exist, one is in the NRA museum and one is in private hands. The action he sells is a casting from the one privately held. The molds have been up graded and the new casting are of high quality. I also have a D. S. Cole action in the hands of Steve Duren to be bbl'd and fitted up -- forgot about that one.  Glenn Fewless is finishing up a Hepburn action I also got from Rodney.   Guess you might say I like them.   Ken

Ken,
Thanks for the heads up on RS. I would like to start from scratch for several reasons. Cost would be for materials only, and I could say I built it myself. I am thinking, a receiver in French Grey or Nickled-plated with engraving would be the right way to go. What do you think? .............Jim

Jim,  the time doing the mach. isn't that much, the real time spent is in writting the program for the CNC mill to follow. You might be aware that I am involved with the recreation of the Wesson #1 long range --- it took Steve approx 200 hours to write a top flight program for his CNC mill tp mach. this action.

A hint you might use if you follow the plans id to forget that horseshoe main spring and use a coil spring --- works much better.  I would suggest you use a Metalife or nickle finish without brighteners IF the piece is engraved in order to best show/see the engraving.     Ken

Hello Jimofatl,  I don't have any Hi-wall plans but I have dealt with take-downs and switch barrels. I was never satisfied with
take-downs because it is hard to keep every thing consistant and tight. The new barrel on my Hi-wall is set up for switch barrel by installing the barrel with 20 inch pounds torque.
I have not made a second barrel to interchange with the
45-90 but have taken it off several times. This method is not new as we have been using switch barrels on bench rest rifles for years. However I did use the same method to make two barrels for a stevens 044 1/2. On that gun, it is a take down
so I don't have to remove the for end or flat spring as on the hi-wall. I do have to use a light duty barrel vise and a home made padded wrench for the receiver. I think one thing that makes the switch barrel sucessful is carefully fitting the
threads to turn the barrel hand tight and then use the tools to bump it to a witness mark. Good luck on your project.

Long Rifle,

I have had several emails similar to your response and have decided to scrap the switch barrel and concentrate on the Farrow action.

Thanks all for your advice and will keep you updated on my progress........................Jim

Mr. Jimofatl:

What's this nonsense about a Farrow? Why not just get yourself a Savage '99? It is just as ugly and a whole lot cheaper.

Send it to me an email. I think we can help you out. Besides, I know a good shrink what maybe can help you with this Farrow thing.

Glenn

Glenn,

Missed you in St Louis at the East/West match. Brought your books, even. Do you want me to send them to you? Why not come down for our SE Regional in October. It's a two day Mid-range target match. I believe a lot of the Bon Aqua crowd will be here.

Would appreciate any advice on the Farrow project. I know of your love of the Rem RB, and I want a center hammer; but not one designed for the Jolly Green Giant. Roll Eyes.........Jim

I'm a newby, to your forum.  While I was reading the post, I found a post about 1885 plans being for sale through ASSRA.  Can anyone tell me about the plans and how to access them or buy them.
Thanks,
Steve Stanfill

You can get the plans by joining ASSRA and sending a request with check for same to Rudy Prusok. His address is available in the Journal and might be on this site.   Ken
