FWIW, when Charlie Dell was doing his extensive research into bullet lubricants, he came to the conclusion that natural lubes were of the proper polarity to adhere to the bullet as needed while still providing the lubricity needed.  I was never able to fully make his work match up with what I know about organic chemistry, but I think we were simply having a terminology problem.   Huh

For a long time Barry Darr and others used the old standard Par-Vas lube composed of equal parts of paraffin and vaseline and although Charlie maintained that it couldn't possibly work on the long term, it worked well for a lot of folks(?)  This brings me to your paraffin and synthetic motor oil based mix.  I would say that the smokeless loadings you are using will do fine with about anything along those lines and unless you try to get over into BP with it, your results will probably be acceptable.  OTOH, with black, you may well run into a hard fouling problem that you don't see with the so-called natural lubes.   Undecided

The above statements are based on my limited experience with various lubes and probably worth exactly what you paid for them...YMMV!  Roll Eyes

Mr Greenjeans,

I dont have Charlie's book now but was a ble to borrow one years ago. I was very interested in his lube formulas and ideas.  I had been using the VasPar lube also. Sometimes it worked great in that it prevented leading. Other time's like when I went to Golden and Raton I'd have fits with leading. Sometimes it only took five shots to lead the barrel. It got to the point I was cleaning the barrel every five shots.  A bit of a distraction.

I too had some trouble with the big words Charlie used. What I did understand is lubricants that contain long stings of molecules make the best bullet lubricants. If I remember right he outlined the best one's. When I fashioned my lube like Charlie advised, my leading problems went away. I distinctly remember shooting a one hundred shot match without cleaning. The barrel didnt have a speck of lead in it. I seldom get leading in any of my rifles now.  I'm using the same lube to shoot 2000 fps in my Krag. No leading.

Is Alox still available?  Is it still being manufactured?

Joe,

I meant to answer your Alox question in my previous response, but got sidetracked.  Roll Eyes  The scuttlebutt is that the manufacturer of Alox changed the formula of the product several years ago, so that the long answer to your question is, "Yes, it is still available, but it may or may not behave in the same way in your lube mix as the formula is not the same."

HTH ~ Froggie

PS  Reminder:  Charlie's book is available from the ASSRA Bookshelf.  It would make a great Valentine's Day gift!  Wink

LEE is still selling their liquid ALOX.  This is recommended buy the Cast Bullet Association if you are into stove top chemistry.  I saw in another forum, sadly I forget which one now, that an outfit is still making the thick gooey kind.  If I can find it again I'll make another post.

The thing about synthetic lubes is they won't absorb water, which is why I suspect they would not be good for BP. So I agree with Green_Frog.  I've spent many years as a fuel and lube oil engineer for ship systems.  Natural mineral oils will absorb water hard as that may be to believe.

One problem I run into with bullet lubes is that I tend to load a lot of ammo on the long Maine winter nights.  Buy the Spring / Summer the brass starts to turn green from the lube leaching copper out of the brass.  I continue to seek the perfect lubricant.

How do you get lead out of a bore?  Biggest paindiaz I run into. Huh

I thought I had answered this one- oh yeah it was the lube formula thread! Anyway, I use Charlie Dell's 36MA, which uses a 600w gear oil! He tried to find a natural substitute for it, as it is a mineral oil, but never did.

Lubrizol makes (or at least made) ALOX, and there are more than a dozen varieties. It's news to me if they've ceased to do so.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I keep a five gallon pail of ALOX 606-55, which is an anti-corrosion coating, around for undercoating vehicles, slathering on farm equipment and woodworking machinery that I'm putting in storage for awhile. It's a long chain calcium based soap, and seems pretty similar to what Lee sends along with their size dies.

This is an interesting thread for me. Although I shoot quite a bit of Blackpowder, mostly 45-70, 50-70 and 12.17x44, until now I've really played little with cast and smokeless. A bit in a Vetterli and some 8x58 RD. However this is the summer I plan to transition away from most jacketed. Thanks for all the information.

BTW, I'm a new member here, forgot to mention that. Thanks for having me and sharing your knowledge.

FWIW I wrung out a Shiloh Roughrider two years ago with several different cast bullets, different alloys, different lubricants, powders, primers, sized diameters, etc....WITH SMOKELESS POWDER....for hunting in Africa.

Hands down, in hot weather, hot gun barrel, cast bullets and smokeless powder in 45-70 LYMAN MOLY gave the best accuracy and no leading.

I was using Reloader-7, IMR-3031 and XMP-5744 and settled on 3031.

Came home and tried Lyman Moly in 30-30 for lever action silhouette with R-7 worked just fine.

Does anyone use the Lyman Ideal(black) lube?
If not, why?  I'd be interested to know as I have several sticks.
Thanks

Same as I use for black.  5-parts beeswax  3-parts lube gard  2-parts anhydrous lanolin  Lube gard is obtained from Napa auto parts.  The synthetic one #61016

i have found a 50/50 mix of vaseline and beeswax to be hard to beat until recently. i was using regular yellow wax and then found some white beeswax from montana. it is much cleaner than yellow wax so i modified my mix to vaseline, white beeswax with a little parafin put in for more body. 1350 fps with 20-1 bullets and no leading. accuracy is good, especially with AA#9
this recipe is attributed to one Barry Darr as best as i can determine. it works for me in my #4 winchester barrel and in my Darr barrel, both 32-40

no sense in getting exotic

I don't have any recommendation for a particular bullet lube, but I've always wondered if Imperial sizing die wax might be a beneficial addition to a lube. It sure is impressive as a die lube.
I'm hoping someone has tried it and will comment on it , so I don't waste my little tin of it, experimenting.

I seldom use smokeless loadings in anything except loads with jacketed bullets.  For the others, over the years, I have had good success with Lyman Ideal, LBT Soft Blue, Lee Liquid Alox, and Rooster Jacket.  Currently Rooster Jacket is the favorite.

Just curious.  Anyone try soy wax in your lube formulas?  I've used it for awhil in lubing fiber shotgun wads.  It's very low ash and very slick & clean.  Should make a good sub for beeswax and cheaper.

I've been using soy wax for 6-7 years, started with blackpowder loads and now use it in my smokeless 32-40.
Another secret an old indian taught me is, avocado oil with the soy wax.  Wink

A tight fitting wad of medium steel or bronze wool wrapped around a jag will do the trick.
