What lubricant do you use for smokeless?

I have another topic. What lubricant do you use in your schuetzen rifle with smokeless?

I come from a background of several years of Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Silhouette. I used SPG with satisfaction but then discovered Emmert's Home Mix (developed by Buck Emmert for smokeless Schuetzen use many years ago) was an excellent black Powder lubricant. I used it exclusively until I quit shooting BPCR.

Naturally, I tried it with smokeless Schuetzen and have found it to be an excellent lubricant. It is easily prepared, and uses readily available components ( 50% pure natural beeswax, 40% Crisco Shortening {the lard like NO FLAVOR stuff}, and 10% Canola Oil. The Crisco and Canola Oil can be found in your local super market. Charlie Dell suggests it would be a good idea to add maybe 5% of anhydrous lanolin (I intend to do that).

What do you use? Why?

"Ain't" this forum great?

In the smokeless i still use what i have of alox &bee . when that is gone i will use the Emmerts lube as you have just printed here ! Only i put so many table spoons of Murphy's oil soap into it  as that is what i use in BP shooting   . It seems to harden the lube some and is easier to clean up after . JAGG

I use 50/50 bear grease and bees wax. It is/was traditionaly used for black and works well for smokeless at least for me. If I am trying a new bullet that I don't have a lube die for and don't want to make one up I either pan lube or just use my fingers and rub it on. It works well at any temperature that I have run into either at Etna Green, Raton or here in Wisconsin.

For years I used Javalina Schuetzen Lube its the oul Smiley's formula 75% alox 25% beeswax. There is now a new company making alox and the last batch I had didn't work the same. I wasn't getting leading but I wasn't getting accuracy either. I have since switched to Charlie Dell's 359 C. The 59 C dosn't cook out the way Alox lubes do and it will also will run through a pump as well as pan lube.

Since I shot both smokeless and black powder I've pretty well settled on SPG. Keeps things simple. But when I plan on using strictly smokeless in a gun I'll use Javelina's 50/50 Alox/Beeswax. I have tried a few of the home made lubes but never found them to be any better than the above two.

I use Emmert's as described above, with the lanolin, for most schuetzen applications and SPG for black and some smokeless buffalo type shooting.

Both do what they are suppose to do, both are a little touchy when the weather is hot.  I just accept it as part of the process.  It's not good or bad just part of the loading process.  I keep a rag available to clean up with and a little nail polish remover to cut it with if I get the brass messy.

Acetone and primers do not mix.  Caution is advised.

I first used Emmerts and got leading.  I then tried Bowker lube which is a half pound each of beeswax and beef tallow and a table sp oon of STP.  I got leading with this also but it may have been the way I rendered the beef tallow with too much heat.
My present lube is a pound of beeswax and a half pound each of lanolin and bear fat with a half stick of LBT blue thrown in for some color.  It turns green with a bit of age.  So far no leading in my rifles with the same loads that leaded with the other two lubes tried.
A good source of fat for rendering is a meat market that butchers livestock and also handles game animals during the deer and bear seasons.  mes

I've been pan lubing my 457676s using a homebrew made up of a farmstore medicated lotion fro critters---mostly emulsified beeswax and lanolin with regular beeswax added to make it  more solid.de  works fin with both BP and 5744

To keep things simple I use SPG for everything.  It's consistent inexpensive and works in my Charlie Willis lube pump  Lyman Lubrasizer and Frying pan.

By everything I mean Schuetzen BPC Gas Checked 30 cals.  45 pistol and even Minne Balls

Many Canadians and quite a few Westerners are using Alberta Schuetzen Lube which has proved to work extremely well from -40 to 110 degrees. Alberta Schuetzen Lube is a Charlie Dell recipe that was improved further by Ralph Macdonald. One of the new additions to the recipe was metal conditioner. I am not sure which of Charlie's recipes formed the base for the Alberta Schuetzen lube.

At what temp will SPG start to migrate into the powder? Smokeless, no wad.

Ira,

Never seen SPG migrate at high temps.  It gets pretty hot here in the summer and it's not a problem with my smokless loads.

Huh I have shot cast bullets in most everything.  I often wonder why we all use "natural" lubricants.  I've just mixed up a batch of parafin wax, synthetic motor oil and Lee alox liquid.  I kept adding oil until I got a consistancy that will flow in my lubrisizer.  It is very slippery stuff.  I've tried it on my 8mm bullets with SR-4759 powder.  Excellent results so far.  I don't think it would work with black powder.

Shipbuilder'
Slippery is good for black powder loads.  Give it a try, it might work great. Here in the Pacific Northwest,  just about anything will work with black in the winter.

Is regular old Alox  still being made?   A shooter at the range told me its not available anymore.
