Mike, the original Pope RE-Decappers were Nickle plated. I would just leave the Simmons the way you got it. A little natural patina from use will look good. Regards, FITZ Smiley

I would agree with FITZ unless like me, you have bad hands that make bare steel rust.  For me it is an on again/off again situation, but I have to keep my Simmons tools well oiled or Jake (Jerry) fusses at me @ E-G when he sees the rust.  Of course he used to fuss at me for keeping it in a fancy wooden box, etc.  I think "Uncle" Jake just likes to give me a hard time!  I would probably nickel plate one of my Simmons tools if the opportunity arose, but I don't have access to a good plater here.  Color casing looks good and along with a light coat of oil provides good protection.

To Plate or Color Case or Rust blue. I live in the Socalist state of confused folks (California) and trying to find a real plater out here may be hard. I know the good platers would first plate with copper and then nickel, it lasted longer that way. Our state is so well monitored by the DO-GOODERS that the other day when I went to purchase lead ingots at a local hardware store the idiot aked me what they were, honest to God. They carried no lead as it was deemed hazardous. So I have now found a relaible lead supplier in of all places San Fransisco with reasonable prices. And for a small fee they will make certain alloys up for you such as 25-1 mix of lead and tin. Or you can buy the lead and tin and do your own.

I like to tart mine up. I niter blue them, then get rid of the scrapers and fit some ebony or rosewood handles over those little skinny arms that dig into your hands. That makes them real comfortable.

I am going on 10 years with one of them. The blueing does get worn thin on the de-cap rod all in all they still look good.
