Smokeless in the 25/20SS

I have the original 25/20 ss barrel that was on my 44.5 when I got it. I did a little shooting with it with black and with the now defunct Goex Clear Shot. It shot pretty nice with both. I was reading the Schuetzen Rifles book by Kelver. It mentions in the loading section loading the 25/20 with unique. I use this powder for several other things but am wondering if anyone could recommend other smokeless loads for this round safe in that gun, the 44.5. I have read that XMP5744 is very versitle and I use it in a 45-70. Could it be used in the smaller cartridge? Can most loads for the 25-20 WInchester be safley used in a 25-20SS? Better yet, can some one tell me of a source of loading info for the 25/20ss?

Jon,
I am assuming your rifle has the old standard 1-14" twist and if so I can't help you much with smokeless loads for your .25/20SS as both my 44 1/2 and Low Wall had 1-10" twist barrels on them and didn't shoot the 75 & under gr. bullets that you need very well.

As for using .25/20 WCF loads in the SS, Waters shows in his book that the WCF case has a water capacity of 26 grs. and the SS has one of 30 grs., so loads for the WCF should be ok in the SS. This will assume of course that you are going to use only cast Lead bullets.

The only smokeless powder I used was 4227 and with bullets of suitable wgt. for my twist would shoot about 3/4", 5 shot groups at 100 yds., so might be a powder to try.

I shoot Unique in my Stevens 44 action .25-20 SS.  I use a 1:20 Lyman 85 gr. bullet lubed with SPG and 5.0 grains Unique.  I breech seat the bullet.  Seems to be a very mild load, which I think is a must for those who bang away with the 44 action.  5 grains is probably a good starting point.

94 gr bullet
AAC-9 8.4 gr.   Aprox  1,676 fps
SR-4759 8.5 gr    "      1,557fps

105 gr bullet
AAC-9 8.2 gr      "   1,587
AAC-9 8.4          "   1,622 fps

H-4227 8.1         1,458

108 gr bullet
SR-4759  9.0 gr   1,547
H-4227    8.1   1,449

Also IMR 4227 works well. 9.0 grs upto  10.5 grs.

Velocities will change with different primers.

The lighter bullets do not work as well as the 100 gr 105 gr bullets. So if possible find a 100 gr bullet or as heavey there abouts as you can.

The  100 to 108gr  can be shot from a 12 or 10 twist and be fine. You'll find bullets upto .990 long, stable to 200yds  from a 12 twist.

At 100 yds you can expect groups .275" to around .590.
